Argyll Etkin’s two day sale on 8th and 9th March featured the properties of a number of outstanding collectors including the collections of Cyprus, Tanganyika, Bolivia and Ecuador formed by Christopher Cruttwell; the Tom Todd collection of Dockwras: the Frank Daniel collection of GB Registered mail; the Ron Blachford collection of the Rhodesias as well as other fine properties including Hong Kong and Treaty Ports, Brazil, Colombia and St Lucia.

The Christopher Cruttwell Cyprus collection brought many exceptional realisations notably:

  • 1353 The ealiest recorded letter from Cyprus £9,860
  • 1875 Ottoman Postal Service 1pi orange - only recorded example used in Cyprus. £5,800
  • 1878 Early GB Registered cover used in Cyprus. £12,760
  • 1878 The only recorded Soldier’s Cover from Cyprus bearing British stamp. £11,600
  • 1880 4d sage green pane of 30 overprinted Specimen £20,880
  • 1880 1/2d rose plate 15 with the major error overprint double SG1a £19,720
  • 1881 Registered cover bearing 1/2d surcharge on 1d plate 201, 21/2d and 4d sage green. £20,880
  • 1881 1d plate 218 mint block of 12. £6,380
  • 1898 Cover from Koilani Postal Agency; one of three recorded £3,944
  • 1920 Cover from the Russian Camp at Famagusa, used to house White Russian refugees believed unique. £1,856
  • 1924 1/4pi - £1 overprinted specimen set in strips of 3. £2,552
