ARGYLL ETKIN ANNOUNCES STRONG RESULTS FOR 27/28 SEPTEMBER AUCTION

World record price for India 1948 Gandhi 10 rupee purple-brown Service stamp £21,850 (versus SG catalogue price of £14,000.

2nd earliest letter from Cyprus dated June 1353 realises £14,950
(Est. £2,000 to £2,500).

Letter from Sir Ernest Shackleton dated November 1920 mentioning
Tristan da Cunha visit sells for £5,750 (Est £2,500 to £3,000).

The 1896 earliest recorded postally used picture post card from
South Africa brought £862 (Est £450 - £500).

Argyll Etkin’s two day Auction achieves realisations of £430,000

A solid GB section featured Civil War letters including a 1644 report from a Parliamentary Spy which sold for £1,150 (Est £650 - £800) and an 1818 printed Questionnaire from The House of Commons sent to Sedbergh with a Free Datestamp which reached £1,380 (Est £400 - £600).

China and Treaty Ports saw a superb Foochow 4c Postal Stationery card with Foochow British Post Office postmark sell for £2,415 (Est £750 - £850).

A particularly fine Anglo Boer War section saw a silver tobacco box given to sailors on HMS Powerful realises £1207 (Est £250 - £300).

Mafeking items were to the fore with a Mafeking Garrison 3d Soup Ticket reasling £575 (Est £150 - £180) and a 1d Sgt. Major Goodyear Bicycle Cover (ex. Griffith) selling for £5,175 (£3,850 - £5000).

Some exceptionally rare Boer postmarks were popular with Erasmus Lager, Ladysmith selling for £862 (Est £400 - £600); Fouries Lager selling for £977 (Est £600 - £700) and General Burger Lager for £1265 (Est £700 - £900).

A further offering from the stunning Christopher Cruttwell collection of Cyprus again attracted keen interest. Highlights included:

  • 1878 Letter from ADC to the High Commissioner to Dublin from ‘942’ numeral with Larnaca transit postmark £4,600 (Est £2,200 - £2,600).
  • 1891 Rizo Karpaso registered envelope to Famagusta cancelled superb squared circle £1092 (Est £250 - £300).
  • 1894 Cancelled at Papho registered envelope to Nicosia £1150 (Est £400 - £600).
  • Rural Posts and village cancellations collections £5175 (Est £3000 - £5000).
