PRESS RELEASE

GB Postal History to Congo and Falkland Islands - amazing results.
Cyprus Stamp market strong.
Hong Kong and China Stamps + Postal History in demand.
Empire Die Proofs achieve high levels.
Zanzibar Stamps popular.

Argyll Etkin’s Spring Auction showed the Stamp and Postal History market is in good shape with total realisations of £198,620 from a varied sale of GB Surface Printed Covers, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, St. Helena, Zanzibar and Natal.

A fine assembly of GB Surface Printed covers saw mail to ‘Shark’s Point, River Congo’ reach £1508 (Est £600) and to the Baptist Mission, Lukolela, Upper Congo £638 (Est £225), while a double rate 1878 Cover to the Falkland Islands was knocked down for £1740 (Est £650).

A fine 1803 entire from Admiral Nelson in London to HMS Victory at Chatham sold for £2300 (Est £2250).

Cyprus was, as always, well supported with a number of realisations in excess of catalogue prices, notably 1960 15m olive green and indigo block of four SG192a reaching £720 (catalogue £480).

Hong Kong saw strong support with Die Proofs of the 1912 King George V issue fetching £1850 (Est £1200 - £1500) and blocks of four of the King George VI issue selling for £1850 (Est £400).

Two fine collections of Israel were keenly sought and sold for £1600 and £4800 respectively.

King George V Die Proofs from St. Kitts all sold well above their estimates illustrating the demand for this elusive material.

A fine range of Zanzibar stamps was carefully studied and brought healthy results - notably the 1913 50 rupee block of four unmounted mint at £1200 (Est £900).
