Description
(15 July) Entire letter from London, U. C. to Jericho, Vermont via Hamilton, Queenston and Boston sent as a 1d Concessionary Rate Soldiers’ Letter duly counter-signed the during the period early1848 – 14 May 1849 when the USA would only accept pre-payment of their share of the postage in U.S. stamps instead of cash in Canada. The 1d concessionary rate was not accepted by U.S who deleted the red “PAID” and handstamped a red “10” across the red ink “1”. This cover was one of the three such cross-border 1d Soldiers’ letters recorded by Steinhart. A fascinating cover.
