G.B. – Postage Dues

1849 Newspaper Wrapper from Saintes, France, to Bristol, with “P.P.” and a superb “1/2” postage due handstamp of the London Foreign Branch.  From 1845 all News-papers from Canada, France and Belgium were charged 1/2d in the U.K., this distinctive “1/2” mark being issued in 1846 to collect this charge.  It is not known when this charge on Newspapers were abolished, but few examples are known to have survived.
