INDIA / G.B.- AIR MAILS 1918 (Dec 13)
Great Britain to India first through aerial post, cover flown from Martlesham to Karachi by R.A.F. Handley Page aircraft “Old Carthusian”, endorsed “By 1st aeroplane UK to India” with an India 2a6p cancelled upon arrival at Karachi (Jan 17 1919, a further strike on the reverse). Handstamped red “FIRST THROUGH AERIAL MAIL / GREAT BRITAIN TO INDIA / KARACHI 14.1.1919.”, applied by the British Embassy at Bandar Abbas, with circular violet “PASSED CENSOR / 2 / KARACHI”. Just 43 covers were carried on this flight from Great Britain, which was delayed by a forced landing at Ormara, the mails then being transferred to H.M.S. “Britomart” which arrived in Karachi on the 17th, the date in the cachet being altered to “17” in manuscript. A fine example of this important pioneer air mail.
