Cover from Paul Diefenderfer, Superintendent of Education, Tutuila, American Samoa s ent from Swains Island during his visit and postmarked with a U.S. 5 cent airmail stamp on arrival in Pago Pago. Swains Island has a population of 100 and is 100 miles south of Fakaofu, Tokelau Ilands and 170 miles north of Apia, Samoa. The cover bears a fine strike of the shortlived Swains Island cachet in mauve. With 5 page extract detailing the fascinating history of Swains Island from ‘American Polynesia’ by Edwin Bryan, published in 1941. Mr. Bryan was curator of collections at the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii.
