WOMEN’S NATIONAL SERVICE LEAGUE HOSPITAL
Mrs.St.Clair Stobart, of the Women’s National Service League commanded a detachment of medical women and nurses for the St. John Ambulance Association. They set sail in September 1914 for Antwerp. After falling into enemy hands where she was to be condemned to the shot as a spy but was later to released. This hand delivered letter and contents asking for volunteers to go with her to Belgium was written on 13th August 1914, the day after Britain declared war on Austria.
